The office was established in 1654. The headquarters is based in Prince Frederick, Maryland. The sheriff Mike Evans, who is elected to a four-year term.

Sheriff's detectives team with detectives from the Maryland State Police, Prince Frederick Barrack in formation of the Calvert Investigative Team (CIT).
